Have you ever received a “Just for the Sake of Giving” gift from your mother? Maybe a vase or a bottle of champagne. Of course it is under the pretense of being thoughtful and selfless, but you know what these gifts really mean: Mother’s Day is coming up in a few months and this year a call will not be enough. While sometimes its the thought that counts, other times people just want a fucking present. These impromptu, just-because gifts are a bribe. A message with the clear purpose of saying:
“This year I want something tangible for Mothers Day (possibly even something with a high alcohol content?).”
Yes, these clues aren’t wasted on me, its a little move I like to call “The Squeeze”. It eliminates the possibility of thrift-gifting (ie. re-gifting something from your own home), and raises the bar so that your gift has to appear to be of equal or greater value than the gift received.
And before reading this I bet bet you thought giving a gift was about sentiment.
